The front-office phrasebook.

Every hobby has a dialect, and nobody was born speaking this one. Here are the 37 terms a newer collector actually runs into — slab, comps, pop report, RPA — defined in plain language, collector to collector. No gatekeeping, no homework required, and no pretending you should already know.

Ask
The price you're asking — your opening number when you list a card or set up at a table. It sits a little above market on purpose, leaving room to negotiate down toward your floor without going under it. See alsoFloor
AutoAutograph
Short for autograph — a card the player signed. On-card autos (signed directly on the card) usually carry a premium over sticker autos (signed on a clear label applied at the factory). Neither is fake; the market just prefers ink on cardboard.
Base card
The standard cards that make up the bulk of a set — no serial number, no special finish. Everything else, the parallels and inserts, is built on top of base. Cheap doesn't mean worthless: base is how most collections start.
BGSBeckett Grading Services
Beckett Grading Services — one of the big three grading companies. Known for subgrades (separate marks for centering, corners, edges, and surface) and for the Black Label: a perfect 10 across the board, and one of the hardest labels in the hobby to earn.
BreaksGroup breaks
Group breaks: a host sells a sealed box or case in slices — usually by team, or by random slot — then opens it on a live stream. Whatever lands in your slice is yours. A cheaper way to chase big cards than buying the whole case, as long as you remember you're buying odds, not a guarantee.
Case hit
A card rare enough that it shows up about once per sealed case, not once per box — the ace of the product, the card everyone is really opening for. Pull odds vary by release; check them before you chase.
Centering
How evenly the image sits inside the borders, measured as a ratio like 55/45 — one of the four things graders score. An otherwise perfect card can miss gem mint on centering alone, so it's the first thing to check on a raw card. See alsoCorners · Edges · Surfaces
Cert numberCertification number
The unique ID a grading company assigns to every slab, printed on the label. Type it into the grader's website to confirm the slab is genuine and the grade matches. Cheap insurance before you buy.
COMCCheck Out My Collectibles
Check Out My Collectibles — an online consignment marketplace. You mail your cards in once; they store, photograph, and list them, and handle shipping to the buyer when a card sells, for a cut of the price.
CompsComparable sales
Comparable sales — what the same card, in the same grade, actually sold for recently. An asking price is an opinion; a comp is a fact. When comps are thin, any value built on them is a guess, and an honest tool says so.
Consignment
Handing your card to someone else — a dealer, an auction house, a service like COMC — to sell on your behalf for a percentage. You give up part of the price and skip all of the work. Worth it when a card deserves a bigger audience than you can reach yourself.
Corners
One of the four pillars graders score. Soft, whitened, or dinged corners are the most common reason a card grades below its owner's hopes — check them front and back under good light before paying a grading fee.
Edges
The four sides of the card — another grading pillar. Chipping and roughness live here, and they're easiest to spot on dark-bordered cards, where every nick shows white.
Eye appeal
How good a card looks in hand beyond what the grade captures — the color, the gloss, the way it presents. Two slabs with the same number can sell for different money because one simply looks better. It's the least measurable thing in the hobby, and everyone prices it anyway.
Floor
Your walk-away number — the lowest price you'll accept before you'd rather keep the card. Set it before you get to the table, not at it; a floor decided mid-negotiation isn't a floor. See alsoAsk
Gem mint
The top shelf of condition: PSA 10 and BGS 9.5 both carry the Gem Mint name. The price jump from a 9 to a gem is often the steepest step on the ladder — which is why centering, corners, edges, and surfaces get inspected so hard.
Grading
Sending a raw card to a company — PSA, BGS, SGC — to be authenticated, scored on condition, and sealed into a slab. It's a math decision, not a loyalty test: if a raw card runs about $60, gem copies sell near $140, and the fee is about $25, grading clears with room to spare; when the math doesn't clear, don't send it. Hobby box
The version of a product sold through card shops and dealers, as opposed to the retail boxes on big-box store shelves. Hobby boxes usually cost more and usually carry better odds — many guarantee an autograph or relic. Check the product's stated odds rather than assuming.
Insert
A card from a themed mini-set seeded into packs — its own design and name, separate from the base set and its parallels. Some 1990s inserts are among the most loved cards in the hobby.
Junk wax era
Roughly the late 1980s through the mid-1990s, when manufacturers printed far more cards than collectors could ever absorb. Famous players, tiny prices — the supply never runs out, so most junk wax carries little market value no matter who's on the front. Collect it for love; just don't underwrite your retirement with it.
Market price vs. sticker price
The sticker is what a seller hopes to get; the market price is what the card actually changes hands for, proven by recent comps. The space between the two is where new collectors overpay. Check comps before you trust a tag — any tag. See alsoComps
Numbered (/99)Serial-numbered
Serial-numbered: the print run is stamped on the card, like 23/99 — copy 23 of just 99 made. It's the cleanest scarcity signal in the hobby, because the supply is printed right on the cardboard. The smaller the number after the slash, the scarcer the card.
Parallel
A version of a base card with a different color, finish, or border — same photo, same card number, different rarity. Parallels run from common color variants to one-of-ones, and knowing exactly which one you're holding is half of knowing what it's worth. See alsoRefractor · Numbered (/99)
Patch
A card with a swatch of jersey or other memorabilia embedded in it. Multi-color patches generally beat plain single-color swatches, and the fine print on the back tells you whether the material is game-worn, player-worn, or neither. Read it.
Pop reportPopulation report
Short for population report — a grading company's running count of how many copies of a card it has graded at each level. Think of it as the depth chart for a grade: a low-pop gem is a different asset than one with thousands of equals.
PSAProfessional Sports Authenticator
Professional Sports Authenticator — one of the big three grading companies, scoring cards 1 through 10. A PSA 10 is labeled Gem Mint, and for most modern cards it's the grade the market prices everything else against.
Raw
An ungraded card — no slab, no label, just cardboard. Raw prices sit below graded prices because the condition is your word, not a grader's; that gap is the entire grading decision. See alsoSlab · Grading
RCRookie card
Rookie card — a player's first officially licensed card in a major release, usually marked with an RC shield on the front. The hobby debut. For most modern players, it's the card the market cares about most.
Refractor
A chromium-finish parallel that throws a rainbow shimmer when it catches the light. Topps introduced the technology in the 1990s, and "refractor" has been hobby shorthand for premium shine ever since — with its own ladder of colors and serial-numbered rarities.
Rookie premium
The extra value the market puts on a player's rookie cards over their later cards. It's persistent: when a player breaks out, the RC moves first and moves farthest.
RPARookie patch autograph
Rookie patch auto — a rookie card carrying both an embedded patch and an autograph, usually serial-numbered. For modern stars, the RPA is typically the most chased card in the product.
Set registry
A program where collectors assemble graded sets and rank them against other collectors — PSA's Set Registry is the best known. Part competition, part public catalog, and a quiet source of demand for high-grade copies of otherwise ordinary cards.
SGC
One of the big three grading companies, known for its black "tuxedo" slabs and a deep reputation with vintage cards. SGC grades modern too — plenty of collectors choose it on looks alone.
Slab
The sealed, tamper-evident holder a graded card lives in, with the grade and cert number on the label. "Slabbed" just means graded; "cracking" a slab means breaking the card out, usually to try for a better grade.
SP / SSPShort print / super short print
Short print and super short print — cards seeded more scarcely than the rest of the set, with no stamped serial number to announce it. The hobby works out what's short from checklists and pull rates. If an ordinary-looking card is selling for strange money, check whether it's an SP.
Surfaces
The front and back faces of the card — the fourth grading pillar. Print lines, scratches, and dimples hide here, and the way to find them is angled light. Modern chrome cards are especially unforgiving.
Vault
A storage service, often attached to a marketplace or auction house, that holds your cards in a secure facility and lets you list and sell without the cards ever passing through your mailbox. Convenient — just read the fee schedule before you ship.
